“The most contested individual for the title of Alexander’s lover is Hephaestion. Whilst never explicitly stated as Alexander’s lover – always referred to as his epithet Φιλαλέξανδρος (friend of Alexander) – several modern historians interpret the relationship as amorous, rather than platonic.
